Desiderata

  • Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
  • As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
  • Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
  • Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
  • If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
  • Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
  • Keep interested in your own career, however humble, it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
  • Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
  • Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
  • Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantement, it is as perrenial as the grass.
  • Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
  • Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
  • Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
  • You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
  • And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
  • Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.
  • And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
  • With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
  • Be careful. Strive to be happy.
"Desiderata" written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann. The rector of St. Paul's Church in Baltimore used the poem in inspirational material in 1956.

God, Forgive Me When I Whine

Today, upon a bus, I saw a girl with golden hair.
I envied her, she seemed so gay, And I wished I was as fair.
When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle.
She had one leg and used a crutch. But as she passed, she gave a smile.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have 2 legs, the world is mine.

I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm.
I talked with him, he seemed so glad. If I were late, it'd do no harm.
And as I left, he said to me, "I thank you, you've been so kind.
It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, "I'm blind."

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have 2 eyes, the world is mine.

Later while walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue.
He stood and watched the others play. He seemed not to know what to do.
I stopped a moment and then I said, "Why don't you join the others dear?" He looked ahead without a word. And then I knew he couldn't hear.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have 2 ears, the world is mine.

With feet to take me thru the snow. With eyes to see the sunset's glow. With ears to hear the foghorn blow.

Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I am blessed indeed, the world is mine.

A SMILE COSTS NOTHING

It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give.

It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it.

None is so poor but he can be made rich by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is natures' best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is something that it is of no value to anyone until it is given away.

VIRUS ALERT

This message contains a virus called smile_starter.smile
Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin.
When he smiled I realized, I'd passed it to him.
I thought about that smile, then I realized its worth.
A single smile just like mine, could travel the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!
